Going for regular doctor checkups is definitely a must for seniors. But there are other things you can do yourself to stay healthy.

A healthy diet. Plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially those high in fiber, are more important than ever because they’re easier to digest. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty. Dehydration is a common issue among seniors.

Don’t wait until problems appear or manifest. Regular health exams are important to screen for cholesterol levels, colon cancer, heart problems and other issues that often don’t show any symptoms until it’s too late. And don’t forget your flu shot.

Don’t mix your meds. Discuss and stay informed regarding about the medications you may be taking, and inform your doctor about any allergic reactions or side effects you may experience.

Go to bed. Plenty of rest is necessary to help keep old bones in shape. Turn off lights and make sure your bedroom is free of distractions that prevent you from going to sleep.

Keep your mind in shape. Doing crossword puzzles, playing bingo or simply talking with others to share ailments and problems can help you keep your mind active.

Wearing the right glasses. Have your glasses prescription checked annually to make sure it is the right one for you, and to assess any deterioration or problems.

Exercise. Gardening, walking around your neighborhood and engaging in physical activity will shield you from all types of health problems that can sneak up on those with sedentary lives.

Check your teeth. A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body, because you’re able to eat better and enjoy life more.

Talk, talk, talk. Humans are social beings and need social interaction. If you live by yourself, search for friends or become involved in activities where you engage with people. If nothing else to simply talk about what’s happening in your life.
