Feinstein: Gray Whale Deaths Result of Climate Change

Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.)  released the following statement on the increased number of dead gray whales washing up on West Coast beaches:

“More dead gray whales have washed up on West Coast beaches this year than ever before, a likely result of human-caused climate change. It’s heartbreaking that so many of these magnificent creatures have perished because we continue to take little or no real action to combat global warming.

“So far this year, 37 gray whales have been found dead on California beaches; a total of 155 have died along the coasts of Canada, the United States and Mexico. The National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration has now declared the elevated gray whale strandings along the West Coast an ‘Unusual Mortality Event’ and is devoting more resources to study it.

“Early reports show that many of the whales starved to death because they had an inadequate food supply during their feeding season in Arctic waters. Scientists believe the loss of sea ice due to climate change has disrupted the Arctic ecosystem and reduced the population of shrimp-like amphipods, the gray whale’s main source of food.

“This means whales are starving to death during their long migration north after the breeding season in Mexican waters.

“Gray whales are what is known as an ‘indicator species’ for ocean health, a measure of how well or poorly the oceans are faring. These deaths are further proof that climate change is having a profoundly harmful effect on our planet.

“If we fail to act now, iconic species like the gray whale could be lost forever, our oceans irreparably harmed and our lives forever altered.”

This editorial is an example of misrepresenting an event and manipulating its significance to achieve some political end. She did a great job of making us all feel sad and super guilty. First the Polar bears, now the whales. This is a nice job of propaganda however the story has more than one explanation. What she did not mention, and there is a bit of research on this you can find with a web browser and a spare 4 min, that the current gray whale population is over 27,000 whales. This number is the highest since the whales were almost hunted to extinction in the 30’s (that was when the global community passed treaties that put a stop to the hunting of gray whales). In 1999-2000 the population of these whales was 25,000 (2000 viewer than today) and a similar "unusual mortality event” occurred during which one third of the entire population died. This event was caused by the population exceeding the carrying capacity of the oceans to support them, which is to say that even under ideal conditions, there is not enough food for that many whales. There was no mention at that time of any climate change related cause. It stands to reason that if the oceans can only support a population of say 20,000 all things being equal, then it also stands to reason that climate change has a smaller roll to play than we are led to believe. I am concerned about the whales, I’m concerned about the environment, but I’m also concerned about the hyperbole and hysteria that break out when there are political motivations behind these natural events. We as humans are empathetic creatures, we are saddened when tragedy strikes, we anthropomorphize animals and thus are compelled to help them often to the detriment of ourselves and others. This allows those with political agendas to manipulate populations and keep themselves in office without actually doing anything. Our state representatives can and will do nothing to save the whales. But many Californians are now even more on the side of climate related legislation because of the story of the starving whales. And everyone is blaming the Russians for trumps election.

Just want to mention the obvious here. "June is National Emergency Pet Preparedness Month" is not the correct title for this story. Ok now onto my real comment. Climate change takes YEARS of human action to happen. The Trump administration has been in office for a little over two years. Feinstein is somehow connecting the dead whales to Trump. We all know this even though she didn't say his name. I agree that dead whales is sad because they are magnificent and intelligent creatures, but her trying to politicize this event is absolutely irritating. There is no mention of other industrialized nations polluting the oceans, of course. That is because the left wants all negative focus on Trump and his administration. It is absolutely derangement syndrome and I think even democrats are getting tired of it.
