WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama says New Hampshire officials are wrong to believe the state should be free from the mandates of federal health care provisions.

In an interview with WMURTV on Monday, Obama said the federal government picks up the tab, at least initially. And he says many New Hampshire residents will benefit from participating in health exchanges that are to be established.

The state Senate is considering barring New Hampshire officials from planning, creating or participating in a state health care exchange. Supporters argue a state health care exchange would be federally controlled.

New Hampshire is one of several battleground states that Obama or his Republican Rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, must win in November.
