The baseball tournament organized as a fundraiser for 10-year-old Titans player Emily Lomeli, who is undergoing treatment for a rare case of ovarian cancer, was postponed last weekend because of rain.
The "tourney" did begin on Friday night, Dec. 6, and the teams were ready to go on Saturday morning before the rain hit, drenching the fields.
"We will probably have to reschedule the tournament maybe to the end of January," said Coach Roger Tafolla. "The fields are all booked until then, so we have to look for the next available dates."
It was a bit disappointing for the organizers after so much planning and preparation.
Still, Emily was able to watch her team play in the preliminary games on Friday night. Although the Titans didn't win, she enjoyed being back in the dugout, sitting next to her teammates and chatting away. She bundled up to protect herself against the cold night air and Coach Roger set up a heater next to her.
"It just feels good to be out in some fresh air instead of being in the hospital," said her mother Edwina.
Before the game started, one team lined up and each member gave Emily a single rose. Even though Emily wore a hospital mask, you could see how happy she was – her eyes sparkled as she held the bouquet of flowers.
"For us, this feels like we're home, our kids grow up here playing baseball, we are all like a family," Edwina said.
"We aren't from the Titans team, we are the Braves team, but we all support her," said a parent as he walked away from his truck emblazoned with "Believe in 17" on his back truck window.
As part of the fundraising effort, toys were collected for the children in the Pediatric Unit at the LAC+USC Medical Center where Emily currently receives her treatment.
