A man and and of his two children sustained non-life threatening injuries after being struck outside of their vehicle in a Walmart parking lot in Panorama City, LAPD officials said.

According to a LAPD Media spokesman, the victims, who were not identified, were transported to the Northridge Hospital Medical Center, and were reported in stable condition. The accident occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at approximately 11:15 a.m., in the 8300 block of Van Nuys Boulevard, police said. The spokesman said a driver attempting to back his vehicle from out of a parking stall collided with another vehicle parked in the stall behind him. At the time of the collision, a man was taking his two children — a boy and girl — out of the parked vehicle.

The other driver was identified as Felipe Perez, 49. The spokesman said Perez, who remained at the accident scene, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and later booked into the LAPD Jail in Van Nuys. Dr. Steve Jones of Northridge Hospital Medical Center identified the child victims as Matthew, 8, and Daniela, 9. Jones said Matthew sustained a fractured jaw, torn liver, a small collapse of the lungs and cuts to the lower right side of the face. He said the boy would not require surgery, and was expected to transferred out of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on Wednesday and into another recovery room in the hospital.

“He has been sitting up in a chair and taking a soft diet,” Jones said of Matthew. “He is alert and watching TV. His mom and dad are proud of way he has handled everything up toy now.” Daniela, Jones said, sustained cuts and bruises to her abdominal wall and legs. She was treated and released. The father, whom Jones did not identify, sustained a fracture and dislocation of his right hip, as well as multiple cuts and bruises. The doctor said the father was scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday, but was expected to make a full recovery.
