ARLETA (CNS) — The body of a man who may have been the victim of gang violence was found in the trunk of a burning luxury sedan in Arleta, police said. Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters discovered the body after they opened the trunk of the burning Audi A4 around 10:35 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Francisca Wheeling.
The vehicle was found in an alley in the 9500 block of Vena Avenue, according to a tweet by Lt. Paul Vernon of the LAPD’s Mission Hills Station. The location is a block west of the Golden State (5) Freeway. In separate tweets, Vernon said the victim appeared to be a Latino man in his 20s and that the incident may be gang-related. Vernon told a videographer at the scene that the car was not thought to be stolen and that it appeared the victim was dead before being placed in the trunk.
The passenger compartment of the car was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, but the fire did not spread to the trunk, Vernon said. “It appears the man was already dead when the fire was set,” Vernon said. “It looks like the killer was trying to cover his tracks.” Vernon said the cause of the victim’s death was “not readily apparent.”
