Jimmy Lu, the Arts Director for "Gabriel's House" in Palmdale

Sylmar resident Emily Carranza said she plans on attending the public memorial service for Jimmy Lu, the Arts Director for "Gabriel's House" in Palmdale. Lu, 45, was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on April 7. Police reports indicate that he was hit by a car after he attempted to make a U-turn and as he was thrown off of his bike, he was stuck by an SUV.

It was more bad news for Carranza to process and a tremendous blow to the Palmdale community where Lu was well known for his grass roots efforts to bring art to the Palmdale community, Carranza, a cousin of Gabriel Fernandez, the 9 year-old boy who made headlines following his death caused by abuse and torture that is suspected to have been afflicted from his mother and her boyfriend. The Fernandez family lived in the Northeast Valley for many years before moving to Palmdale.

"Jimmy Lu was a really a good person," Carranza said. "Since all of this happened, I experienced all of it and gone through it, [At the same time,] I've met some good people who came together especially at the center," Carranza said.

Lu was credited to have been one of the people instrumental in the opening of the music and performance arts center. Carranza attended the ribbon cutting celebration last February and was pleased that so many children were taking art and dance classes at the center, all free of charge to area children where Lu also taught drama.

Lu was the founder of Art Branch, a non profit organization that is responsible for overseeing "Gabriel's House." His wife said that she will keep the arts program going which was her husband's vision. A date for the public memorial service has not yet been announced.
