BURBANK (CNS) — Authorities are assessing damage caused by a water main break that flooded a building at the Burbank Fire Department’s training facility and also caused a large sinkhole in the parking lot.

The problem was reported shortly on Tuesday, June 17, after 5 p.m. on at the training facility at 1845 Ontario St., Burbank fire Capt. Peter Hendrickson said.

The break also disrupted water service to about 50 homes along Ontario Street between Pacific Avenue and Victory Boulevard, Hendrickson said.

The rupture in the 12-inch main led to a sinkhole about 30 feet in diameter and 15 feet deep, and caused flooding in a building that is used for classrooms and also houses the Emergency Operations Center, Hendrickson said. A damage estimate was not immediately known.

The EOC will be out of service while a damage assessment is conducted, but authorities can still activate — if needed — the backup EOC, which is in the joint fire department/police department headquarters facility at 311 E. Orange Grove Ave., Hendrickson said.
