Police investigators examine a Camaro at the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Parthenia Street alleged to be involved an accident that killed one man and injured two others.

An out-of-control car jumped a curb and crashed into a bus stop in North Hills on Tuesday, June 17, killing an elderly man and injuring a woman and another adult male.

Authorities said the accident, which took place at the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Parthenia Street around 10:45 a.m, involved three vehicles.

Police said a man who was sitting on a bench at the bus stop was killed in the crash. The victim was identified as Lazaro Navarro Ayala, 75, of Van Nuys.

The collision was so strong and violent, the bench the man was sitting on was ripped from the concrete and the victim was hit and thrown approximately 40-50 feet away from the accident site before landing in some bushes. The victim was declared dead at the scene.

A woman who was also at the bus stop when the collision occurred was rushed to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center at Mission Hills in serious condition. A witness said he heard the woman screaming for help after her leg was injured.

The driver of the car was also transported to the hospital, but his condition is unknown.

Witness Desard Maine said he was coming out of a store across the street when he saw a Chevrolet Camaro going out of control.

“I heard the screeching first, and then I looked and there was just a big crash,” Maine told KABC-TV.

Another witness ran after seeing the car coming toward him.

“My first instinct was as I was running, I threw my bag like a couple feet, and then I end up just barely grazing where the bumper is, the front bumper with the grill. I kind of just jumped over it," the man told KABC.

The car was heading southbound on Sepulveda Boulevard when “it collided with a vehicle exiting a parking lot from a business,” said LAPD Capt. Maureen Ryan, commander of the Valley Traffic Division. “That vehicle continued out of control and collided with another vehicle, and then ran off the roadway sideways, continuing in the southwest direction, and hit the two bus benches that were bolted down.”

At least three crashed cars were visible at the site: a red Chevrolet Camaro, a gray Honda and a gold Nissan Sentra.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
