Sammy Ponce is living proof that the Boys & Girls Club is effective and has contributed to his being a model citizen in the community.
He is an alumnus of San Fernando High School, and is currently a freshman at Los Angeles Mission College, majoring in computer engineering with a minor in communications. Ponce, 18, has a clear vision for his future, either he will run his own Fortune 500 Company or coach a Division I basketball team.
Being a full-time student and working two part time jobs has not stopped Ponce from mentoring other youth. He is a volunteer basketball coach for the junior varsity team at San Fernando High. Additionally, he was a volunteer youth worker at the Club for several years. Club members of all ages look up to Sammy; he is a true role model and an outstanding member of the Club.
Ponce has been a leader both at the Club and in his community. His philosophy is "leaders do not demand excellence; they build and inspire excellence in others, by being the best they can be." Ponce exemplifies these words daily through his actions, especially when he is working with younger members at the Club.
As "Youth of the Year" Ponce received a $1000 scholarship, a laptop and a family pack of tickets to Disneyland.
