LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The apparent road rage beating of a man by two others on the Golden State (5) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles was being investigated today by the California Highway Patrol.
A smartphone video of the confrontation, which was posted Tuesday on the website LiveLeak, appears to have been taken June 12 on the cell phone of a witness, according to notes accompanying the video.
At a news briefing this morning, CHP Officer Denise Joslin said the incident apparently occurred about 3:30 p.m. June 12 on the northbound I-5 Freeway south of Seventh Street in an area known as the East LA Interchange.
Joslin said authorities were looking for the men involved in the fight, and she appealed for witnesses to call the CHP Central Area office at (213) 744-2331. She declined to answer reporters' questions on camera.
The video depicts the victim arguing with three men outside their cars on the side of the freeway.
The victim and one of the three men square off and exchange blows, but then another of the men jumps the victim and helps take him to the ground. The two suspects then repeatedly kick the victim in the head as he lies on the pavement with his arms at his sides.
The three men then get into an older model Volkswagen Jetta and flee the scene. The video shows the Volkswagen's license plate number as 3UGW962.
Finally, an onlooker is heard imploring the stunned victim to get up. The video had nearly 131,000 views as of early today.
