The student body of Herrick Elementary School in Sylmar screamed in delight as Los Angeles Dodger pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Shawn Tolleson strolled onto their campus for a visit on Wednesday, Aug. 22. But the two Major League Baseball players were not there just for a photo op.
Both Kershaw and Tolleson, and their wives Ellen and Lynley, were part of the Dodgers Back-To-School Caravan that delivered backpacks filled with school supplies – including paper, tissues, crayons, markers, pens and pencils – to all 640 students at the school. Joining the Kershaws and Tollesons in distributing the materials were Tiffany Billingsley, wife pitcher Chad Billingsley, and Maggie Ethier, wife of outfielder Andre Either.
Besides the backpacks, an addition 125 pairs of boys and girls shoes were on hand to be given to the most needy students.
Co-sponsors A Foundation For Kids, an Inland Empirebase organization, and the Dodgers Dream Foundation provided the backpacks and shoes. The school supplies were donated from various businesses, and from fans that donated money and supplies for the Back-To- School Supply Drive at Dodger Stadium on Aug.4-5. Herrick was the lone Valley area school among the four that received the backpacks and shoes during the caravan's three-day trek, which concludes today, Aug. 23. Photo by Mike Terry.
