Celebrities, Classic cars, school bands, horses, and the guest of honor, Santa Claus, will roll down Van Nuys Boulevard this Saturday, Dec. 1, as Pacoima celebrates the holiday season with its annual Christmas Parade.

The parade organizers point out that there is much history and a lot of pride by those who grew up, live and work in Pacoima and the parade express that spirit.

"This is our 45th annual parade and this year's theme is 'One Team, One Dream'", said Ramiro Estrada, president of the Pacoima Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the parade.

"This year we're honoring local sports heroes in boxing, football, basketball, any other sports. There's a lot of people from Pacoima who made it out and won the Heisman Trophy or were kickboxing champions," Estrada added.

In honor of the theme, this year's parade co-grand marshals are members of the San Fernando High School Wrestling Team, which won the Los Angeles City Section championship this year, as well as Students Run LA, an organization that trains teenagers to participate in the Los Angeles marathon.

William "Blinky" Rodriguez, a former world kickboxing champion and now head of the nonprofit, gang intervention program "Communities in School," and Reggie Kinlaw, a former Los Angeles Raider football player, serve as co-honorary Grand Marshalls.

Other personalities scheduled to participate in the parade include actor Danny Trejo, known for a number of movies, including "Machete"; Francisco S. Gabilondo, grandson of the famous Mexican children's songwriter "Cri-Cri"; radio celebrity Carlos Álvarez, and Miss Peru California, Daniela Pastor. Also in attendance will be singer Vicky Cabrera; the presenters from Azteca America's "A Todo Color" show, Belen, Carlos, Carolina and Lizbeth; Patricia Arbulu from Azteca America's "Entre Nos" show; and Luis Sandoval of Univision's Despierta America show. Other personalities who will make their way along the parade route are Ignacio "Nachingon" Sandoval from 96.3 FM radio; Javier Hernández "El Jarocho" and Jorge Miramontes from Global TV Channel 57.8; as well as radio presenter Marcela Luevanos.

The Wells Fargo Stagecoach will also appear in the parade. "This is an opportunity for people to come out with your lawn chairs and enjoy the parade," said Estrada, noting that classic car groups, charros (Mexican horse riders) and political figures will take part in the event.

"Hopefully we'll have nice weather. We've been planning for the past six months and we are hoping the sky clears by the time of the parade, and we are blessed by the man upstairs and can have a nice event."

The parade will begin at 9 a.m. as its customary, but this year the route has been reversed. The event will kick off at David Gonzalez Recreation Center at Norris street and Van Nuys Boulevard, and will travel south down Van Nuys Boulevard, ending at the Pacoima City Hall. A festival with music from local talent, food and booths from local organizations will follow the parade.

"This event is a tradition that brings the community together," said Estrada, adding that they have 100 participants lined up for the parade, which is often viewed by an estimated 10,000 spectators along the route.
