Free citizenship services and waivers available for legal permanent residents this holiday season
Los Angeles - The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) has announced that Legal Permanent Residents (LPR) who apply for citizenship and meet certain criteria may receive a waiver this holiday season to cover the $680 application fee.
"Anyone who is currently receiving a means-tested benefit, such as SSI, Section 8, food stamps, Medicare, CalFresh or other programs, may qualify for an automatic fee waiver this holiday season. Not many people take advantage of this offer," stated Horacio Arroyo, Director of Community Education and Civic Participation at CHIRLA.
"This is an important opportunity for someone who has been waiting to be naturalized but did not have the $700 required for the application. We do not know for how long this exception will be made available," said Mr. Arroyo.
CHIRLA offers daily free workshops and application processing services. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires a $680 money order or check before they can begin adjudicating a request. By indicating that an applicant receives a means-tested benefit, USCIS will usually approve a waiver automatically.
"Many people do not know they qualify for a fee waiver and let time go by without applying for citizenship. On November 6, immigrants and Latinos made a huge difference with their vote. I am sure many people wish they could have cast a vote. If you become a citizen now, you may be able to vote and help elect the next Mayor of Los Angeles," said Mr. Arroyo.
To make an appointment or get more information about applying for naturalization and a waiver, please contact CHIRLA at (951) 201-8992 or (818) 274-4336. Workshops and applications can be completed throughout Los Angeles County.
