The owner of a Burbank day care center and one of her employees have been arrested on felony charges stemming from the death of an 11-month-old boy left in their care about a year ago. Milena Nikodijevic, 51, of Burbank, and Wendy Roxana Oropeza, 21, of Van Nuys, were taken into custody at their homes on Tuesday, March 5, in connection with one count each of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse, authorities said. Nikodijveic was released after posting $100,000 bail and is due in Pasadena Superior Court on March 26, said Burbank police Sgt. Darin Ryburn. Oropeza remains jailed on $100,000 bail and was set to be arraigned Wednesday. The charges against them stem from the death of the 11-monthold boy, who was left at Nikodijevic's in-home day care facility, Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars, in the 200 block of Santa Anita Avenue on Feb. 1, 2012. Oropeza, who worked for Nikodijevic, allegedly improperly secured the boy inside another child's car seat inside the day care facility. The infant, identified in the criminal complaint only as "Adam D.,'' was asphyxiated by the chest strap after falling asleep in the car seat, according to the District Attorney's Office, which alleges Nikodijevic had three times the number of children under the age of 2 in her car than allowed by her license. She had been previously cited twice for having too many children under the age of 2 in her care, authorities said. Burbank police said the baby was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Medical Center after emergency medical staff unsuccessfully tried to revive the infant after finding him in "breathing distress" at the licensed day care facility. The two women face up to seven years in state prison if convicted, according to the District Attorney's Office.
