ARLETA (CNS) – Police hope security photos they plan to release, will lead to the gunman who killed a wireless phone storeowner in Arleta.

Nestor Hernandez, 34, died in front of his store, which occurred July 8 at 8940 Woodman Ave., about 8:40 p.m., as he was closing his business for the night, according to police and the coroner's office.

Witnesses described the suspect as a heavy-set Latino in his 30s with a shaved head, said Los Angeles police Lt. Paul Vernon. The suspect, armed with a shotgun, was wearing an oversized white jersey and a white baseball cap.

Several people called 911 to report the shooting, and a bystander flagged a passing fire truck to help Hernandez who was shot, Vernon said. He added that firefighters found Hernandez down on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds.

Hernandez' wife later told investigators that her husband had owned the store since February.

Police initially indicated the slaying may have occurred during a robbery but now say the attack may have stemmed from a "grudge."

"It's apparent the shooter appears suddenly from the victim's right," Vernon said in a statement. "There's no real confrontation, just an immediate assault. It's deliberate, premeditated, and tends to show it's a grudge."

The gunman was last seen running south on Woodman "for quite a distance," Vernon said, adding that investigators at the scene recovered several spent cartridges.

Authorities circulated a security photo of the suspect and a separate security photo of a woman who was seen entering a nearby tattoo shop.

"(We) believe she is the nearest eyewitness to the shooting, and would like to talk to her," Vernon said.

Anyone with information about the slaying was urged to contact Detective Efren Gutierrez of the Mission Station's Homicide Unit at (818) 838-9948. Anonymous tips may be made by calling Crime Stoppers at (800) 222- TIPS.
