Third graders Dulce Casas Dominguez and Sahra Arevelos try on their new Disney backpacks.
PACOIMA -- More than 260 third-graders from Vaughn Next Century Learning Center walked the red carpet Wednesday to cheers from 20 Disney VoluntEARS and a team from MEND - Meet Each Need with Dignity - the Valley's leading poverty-relief agency. The event was MEND's 12th annual Head to Toes celebration.
They quickly were immersed in activities, from head to toe. Vision checks, dental exams, exercise made fun and arts and crafts, then headed home with new shoes and back-to-school backpacks donated by the Walt Disney Company, filled with school supplies courtesy of the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation.
The highlight of the day was a surprise visit from NBA player brothers, retired Jarron Collins and free agent Jason Collins, Valley natives and long-time supporters of MEND. At 6 feet, 11 inches, The Collins Brothers drew the awe of the youngsters from Vaughn New Century Learning Center, who earlier had shot baskets on a miniature hoop.
Also in attendance were Verizon Director of Government & External Affairs, Julia Cooksey, who presented a $70,000 gift from Verizon in support of the MEND Dental Clinic; and Angel Barnuevo of State Senator Alex Padilla's Office to recognize MEND and Verizon for their contributions to the community.
