Sister Mary Fatima Guevara, The principal at Poverello of Assisi Preschool in Sylmar, died on Sunday, Sept. 15, while on vacation in Mexico. She was 65.
The cause of death is unknown, but officials at the school said Sr. Fatima had been in ill for some time, and that the illness had gotten worse in Mexico.
Sr. Fatima twice served as principal at the school, the first time from 1986-1995, and again from 2003 to the present. She also taught at Poverello of Assisi.
She was well known in the local community for her love of children, hard work and strong faith. In a letter sent out to the school community, it was said that Sr. Fatima "truly embraced the meaning 'Let The Children come to me.'"
She was credited for the success and determined tenacity to raise funds to expand and build the new school. Sr. Fatima is credited with successfully bringing the school to its present site.
A local memorial in celebration of Sister Fatima's life is pending, according to Sister Patricia Cerillo, Assistant Principal.
