To officially begin L.A.'s official "El Grito" Mexican Independence Day celebration, 19-year-old Sherline Lopez stood before thousands on the city hall steps with only a handheld microphone and sang the U.S. national anthem – a cappella.
For those who had never heard Lopez sing, they were surprised that she could deliver the difficult song in front of thousands with such poise and power. "Oh my God, what a voice," one of the dignitaries on stage remarked.
For Lopez it was another challenge and opportunity that she readily accepted. More than anything, it has always been her greatest dream to sing and Lopez is admired for her ability to belt out a song, with control, power and passion.
All necessary skills for the young female mariachi singer, who last year was the previous winner on the variety talent show, "Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento," broadcast on Estrella TV. Now she is a competitor in an international competition "La Reyna del Mariachi," a vocal competition produced by Mariachi icon Pepe Aguilar.
"Sherline has proven herself as phenomenal vocalist time and time again at some very high-profile events," said teacher Sergio Alonso, who is encouraging people to vote for his former student in the online competition and describes her as having a real desire and commitment to succeed.
"The talent, skill, and experience she possesses is unheard of within someone her age and the years of training she has had with the San Fernando Mariachi Master Apprentice Program is testament to her passion, determination, and desire to be the next Reyna del Mariachi."
The competition requires that contestants audition online with the public acting as judges, casting their vote for their favorite singer. Prior to this competition, there was a contest for young men, "El Rey del Mariachi," but this is the first time that the female version of the competition has been offered.
When asked why she wants to be the next Queen of Mariachi, "La Reyna del Mariachi," Sherline shares that she has always loved traditional Mexican music ever since she was a little girl. It has been her greatest wish to sing on a large stage, performing the great love she feels for her culture.
When asked who her favorite singers are, she names Aida Cuevas, Miguel Aceves Mejía, Antonio Aguilar, Pepe Aguilar, Vicente Fernandez, and Lucha Villa. "I grew up listening to all of these great performers and singing their songs that have so much meaning to me."
