West Valley foes Birmingham and Chatsworth will play for something bigger than a league title — the City Section Division I baseball championship, this Saturday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at Dodger Stadium.
The Chancellors (28-5-1), seeded fifth, held off Pacific Palisades, the ninth seed, by a score of 3-2 in one of two semifinal games played at USC on Tuesday, June 3. In the other semifinal, Birmingham (18-14), seeded sixth, upset No. 2 seed Narbonne of Harbor City 3-1.
Chatsworth has won nine City titles, the last one coming in 2009. The Chancellors have lost in their past two final appearances, in 2011 and 2012. Birmingham has won three City titles, but none since 1969.
The contest guarantees that a Valley area team will win the City’s top division for the 22nd straight year, and the 41st time in the past 42 seasons. The last non-Valley team to win Division I was San Pedro, in 1992.
The Division II game will also be played at Dodger Stadium. Defending champion Van Nuys (20-9), the No.2 seed, will face top seed Dorsey of Los Angeles (21-4) at 10 a.m.
