Los Angeles Valley College guard/forward Ani Avanessian has been named the Western State Conference South Division Player of the Year, and Monica Hang is the WSC South Division Coach of the Year.

Hang guided the Monarchs' 2012-13 women's basketball team to a 22-8 overall record and the WSC South Division championship. Valley College went 11-1 in conference play, the lone loss to Bakersfield College, 55-49, on Jan. 19.

Avanessian, a 5-9 sophomore who graduated from Monroe High, averaged 16.4 points and 8.7rebounds overall, while averaging 17.7 points and 9.4 rebounds in conference play.

During the season she was named the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association, and the California Community College Sports Information Association January Female Athlete of the Month. Additionally, she is a five-time Western State Conference Player of the Week.

Avanessian is joined on the South Division all-league team by Monarchs teammates Lydia Pope, Jackie Sanchez, and Jordan Santiago. A fourth teammate, Bobbie Morgutia, was given honorable mention.

Valley College clinched its conference South Division championship by defeating Glendale College, 56-25 at home last Saturday, Feb. 23. It was the team's first title in 10 years.

The Monarchs are the fourth seed in the Southern California Regional playoffs, and host Chaffey College, seeded 13th, at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
